Free AI Courses for Business: Why Nothing Changed After
Free AI courses for business from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are honestly good. So why didn't your business change after? What the courses can't do for you.
I want to be clear up front. The free AI courses for business out there right now are good. Like actually good. I’ve taken some of them. If you haven’t, go take one this week.
But I keep meeting owners who did the course, got the certificate, maybe put it on LinkedIn… and then nothing in their business changed. Same team. Same week. Same busywork. Chatbot tab open in the corner.
So what happened?
There’s a lot of free stuff now
The big AI companies are basically falling over each other to train you for free.
Anthropic Academy launched in March with 17 free courses, Claude 101 and AI fluency and that kind of thing. Google made its AI Professional Certificate free for every small business in the US. And OpenAI Academy is free and they say they want to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
It’s a great time to learn. No excuse not to.
So why didn’t anything change?
A few reasons. None of them are the course’s fault really. It’s just not what a course is for.
It’s general. It has to be. A course built for millions of people can’t be about your business. It teaches you what AI can do. It can’t tell you which of your jobs it should do, starting Monday.
It’s one company’s tool. Every company’s course teaches its own product. Makes sense, they’re paying for it. But most real work goes better with more than one model (I get into that in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Grok for business).
It trains a person, not a team. You learned something. Cool. Your team didn’t. And even if they all take it, nobody decided who does what with it.
Nobody owns it after. You finish the course and go back to the fire you were putting out before. Who’s in charge of making AI actually do something in your business? If the answer is “everybody,” it’s nobody.
And nobody follows up. A course doesn’t check in three weeks later to see if you’re using any of it.
The numbers back this up. Gallup found only 25% of employees say their company has communicated a clear AI plan. BCG found only 36% of employees feel properly trained on AI, and that number didn’t move from last year, even with all this free stuff out there.
Practice is what actually moves the needle
Here’s an interesting one. Anthropic studied people using its coding agent and found beginners got verified results 15% of the time, while intermediate users and up hit 28 to 33%. Basically double. And most of that jump happens going from beginner to intermediate.
You don’t get from beginner to intermediate watching videos. You get there doing real work, with someone who’s ahead of you telling you where you’re screwing up. Same as sales. Nobody ever became a closer by finishing a course.
So take the course. Then what?
Take it. Seriously. Then do the part the course can’t.
Figure out which jobs in your business AI should own first. Put one person’s name on it. Get your team doing it on real work, not practice exercises. And have somebody checking that the AI is actually doing what it says it’s doing, because it will absolutely tell you it’s done when it isn’t.
That’s the stuff I do with teams, and I’m not going to pretend I can put it in a blog post, it’s built on each business. But if you want to see how big the gap is on most teams right now, read your team is already winging it. Kinda scary honestly.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best free AI courses for business?
Anthropic Academy, OpenAI Academy and Google’s AI Professional Certificate are all free and legit. Take whichever matches the AI your team already uses. Just don’t expect a course alone to change how your business runs.
Are free AI courses enough to train my team?
They’re a good start for individuals. They don’t pick the jobs AI should do in your business, assign an owner, or make sure your people can run it without help. That part is on you or on whoever you bring in.
Do AI certificates matter?
A little, for a resume. For your business, what matters is whether someone can actually run AI on real work, twice, without help. Nobody hands out a certificate for that.
Done with the course and ready for the part that changes things? Book an AI Staff Audit.
Want this working on your team, not just in a blog post?
The AI Staff Audit maps the jobs your team should hand to AI, what it saves you, and what to leave alone. If it doesn't find at least five hours a week, you don't pay.
